Culture Within The Team- Bill Gates

The Culture Within Bill Gates's Team
"The most important 'speed' issue is often not technical but cultural. It's convincing everyone that the company's survival depends on everyone moving as fast as possible."
-Bill Gates-

Bill Gates developed a "career driven" culture among his teams. The working culture in Microsoft Corporation recognises and respect the others perspectives, ideas and opinions. Gates broaden the awareness of gender diversity and having the initiative that make Microsoft an inclusive place to work at. MSC encourage women engineers to have a long term careers in technology industry.

Microsoft aslo provide the employees with a world-clas environment to work in which promotes innovation, productivity and create a balance in work and life.

The cultural aspect in Microsoft basically encourages all the team members to have fun and collaborate together . The environment that are equipped makes the teammates to get out and keep going. Apart from that, a flexible culture is also to access to the latest outcomes tools and create a comprehensive family life.

In my opinion, the working environment is Microsoft create a peaceful and respectful atmosphere. Since Microsoft is an engineer company and mostly people working there are man so the culture in the office encourage women to take part and work in their company. The culture in the office is motivating the staff because they cultivated a fun ambience.

As a student in Fairview International School are required to do Community and Service because we want to make a change and appreciate what we have since we are the fortunate student to have a well established school with an excellent education system.Bill and Melinda Foundation funds health and education projects all around the world. I think that he did the right thing by setting up the organisation because he believe that we can make a change to our world. The Gates have established the foundation and they have made the world a better place for those who could not afford to pay for their terrible health condition and getting education for the children.

Motivation and Communication

How do Bill Gates;
3) Motivate his team
"The key to supporting the motivation of your employee is understanding what motivates each of them."

-McNamara, American Business Executive and The 8th Secretary of Defence -

Bill Gates considered that the surrounding or the environment of the work place provided will motivate the employees and it is one of the important thing for Microsoft. Microsoft will not employ people who are brilliant and expect that they will be motivated, they employed skilful people and as an individuals and provide them the environment that will encourage them to develop own motivation and bring them to another level.

Microsoft will ensure that their employee or team are motivated and that the goals of the organisation are understood by them through the culture and aware of the what that is required of them. Microsoft achieves this by integrating their goals into Human Resources Management programs that were held. Gates also follow the Maslow's hierarchy of need theory to motivate his team.

4) Communicate with his team
"Gates has improved somewhat in his communication style, but it is not Gates's strongpoint and can be intimidating to some followers."
- J.Anne,Hubpage-
However, Bill Gates love to speak everyone's language but that does not mean he can speaks multiple language but he can understand each of them. An effective communication differentiate a big major gap between a great leader and a good leader.  It is important that a great leader to speak  the language that the audience can understand. Despite the success that Gates earns he also keep on to work his communication skills and style.

As for Gates, communicating with his team is not and never a problem to him as the employees of Microsoft are always on the same communication wavelength as Bill Gates. However communicating with audience during the presentations to journalist, his style of communicating is often awkward and nerdy.

Nowadays Gates have worked on his presentation skills and he is a much improved communicator. In the 2009, Bill Gates was cited as an example for "How to deliver Effective Presentations?" written in The 100:Insights and Lessons from 100 of the Greatest Speeches Ever Delivered by Simon Mair and Jeremy Kourdi.

I think that Bill Gates provided the perfect environment and because of that, he thinks that by providing the suitable environment will motivate his teams. Environment plays an important role is motivating the staff at work for example, our school environment is full of green so students do not feel too stress out and do not feel suffocated since trees give out oxygen so the environment feels clean. Not only that, our school also is a friendly environment so everyone is helping each other and avoid having a friends from having depression. Same goes to Microsoft working environment where people motivated others to work smartly. Bill Gates communicates well with his team member although he was communicating awkwardly previously but he has worked on his communication skills and styles. Plus Bill Gates has developed his communicating as his audience are broaden.

Leading and Recruiting

Microsoft  is the wealthiest and most successful organisation around the world. Other companies mostly focus on better manufacturing techniques, innovations, better service and good quality products. Microsoft however focus mainly on human resources perspective and in fact Microsoft is an employee-driven organisation.

How do Bill Gates;
1)Led his team
Bill Gates thinks that the success of an organisation is based on the effectiveness of his team. He values his team and staff and identify the importance of his staff. Mainly most of his team members were just out of college so the way he led his team starts with keeping the atmosphere at work to somewhere familiar to them or gave them a sense of social belonging. Gates are always focused on leading each of them towards their ultimate goals.Apart from that, he encourages his team to do horizontal transfer where the employees will developed themselves by exchanging jobs.

2)Recruited his team
Bill Gates believes that he should be recruiting extremely intelligent staff where intelligent comes before experienced. Bill Gates prefer to hire extremely intelligent people but experience is not necessary. Recruiting his team begins with sourcing people from a high class educational facilities such as graduates from Harvard,Yale, MIT, Carnegie Melon and Stanford. The people from Microsoft that recruits new members will visit any of these University and look for the most brilliant, driven students. Bill Gates does not need the experience that the recruits have but he prefer to have new employees with no experience.

The students who are selected will have to go through an interview session and the interview is not done to test knowledge but to test their ability to solve problem, how their thoughts are processed and their working habits. Some interviews that involve technicality then it focus more on problem solving methods where the interviewers ail give the interviewee some problem scenarios. Some unexpected question will also be ask to the candidates to test their creative problem-solving skills.

Examples of the Interviewer Questions;
1) How many times does the person use the word 'the' in a day?
2) Describe the perfect Television Remote Control.

In the interviews, the interviewees are pushed to their limits where if they survived the interviews session then they will manage in the Microsoft working environment. The importance of hiring the right people is in the 'n minus 1' strategy in Microsoft which means less people are employed than they are required. Bill Gates don't only just hire people to fill a position but he mainly focused on recruiting the right team members.

In my point of view, the way Gates led his team is very  effective as he understand the importance of his members. Gates not only value his staff but also keeping them comfortable at work. Plus Gates encourages his members to always try to achieve their optimum goals. The way Bill Gates led his team is in order although he cultivated the ideas of exchanging roles in the their workplace and learn a new things for knowledge. Recruiting members in Microsoft does not require much experience in a particular industry but the intelligence in solving problems and how your mind processed to come out with different ideas and ways in problem solving.

Bill Gates

The leader I am focusing on is Bill Gates.

BILL GATES

Leader born or made.........
Leaders are made and not born because each and everyone are born TO BE a leader not born AS A leader. It is how an individual develop herself/himself to step up and be the leader. Although being a leader is not easy but a leader is not the one who directs people to do something but to do the work with his/her fellow teammates and learn new skills together and take the skills to another level.  Anyone can be a leader because even with little skills they can still improve and polish their expertise with others.  What a leader does not know about, the member may have know lots about and vise versa.

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others."

Background
Bill Gates came from an entrepreneurship family and high spirited liveliness. His mother was a teacher teaching in University of Washington Regent and also she was the chairman of United Way International.

Even before graduation Gates left Harvard University in 1975 to pursue his dream to form Microsoft along with his childhood friend, Paul Allen. They had planned to do progression on developing a software for a personal computer market.

Bill Gates had so much interest in computer programming and software that he began to develop his interest since he was thirteen years old. In the year 1973, he became the student of Harvard University and met Steve Ballmer who is not the Microsoft's chief executive officer. Even when he was still a Harvard undergraduate, Bill Gates had wrote a programming language basic for the MITS Altair microcomputer.

Bill Gates is one of the richest man in the world and he is the co-founder of Microsoft and the creator of Windows. He is also best known as the entrepreneur that made a revolution in the computer industry.

I think that Bill Gates success does not only come from his effort but also from his interest in what he is doing. A great leader is not only working hard to get to where they are but because they put interest and  enthusiasm in doing something. Even making a blog about Leadership and choosing my leader, I am motivated to create a blog full of information about Bill Gates because Bill Gates is a role model to me. He does not only become successful in his career because of hard work but also motivation and eagerness to develop a computer software and earned his position as one of the richest man in the world.
